My buddy N3MEQ approached me to help a fellow ham with a hearing problem.
He likes to contest a bit, uses NA, likes CW, and wants to try a code
reader. I used to have one.
Budget is limited. If you may know of a stand-alone code reader, like the
Kam or AEA, or have a software/hardware solution to reading some CW on the
screen while still in a contest type of mode, please let me know.
E-mail here is fine. Preferable address is penneys@pecan.cns.udel.edu.
Tnx Bob

Subject: Help On Selection of 2M HT
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Hi,
I`m currently on reclocation in WA for a couple of months. I would like
to get myself a 2M HT. Last time I bought one of these was about 10 yrs
ago. I was wondering if anyone could give me any experience or advice
on what to buy. On comment I can make on what I`ve seen so far is that
ICOM seem to have a bewildering array of HT`s.
My requirements in order of priority are loosely these : -
1) Small-My Wife wants to be able to carry it in her purse comfortably.
2) MODIFIABLE for the UK Tone Burst.
3) Pager Function.
4) Easy To use.
5) Good Performance.
6) Ease of use in the car.
Any comments advice would be gratefully received.
Robin Alexander (GM4YED awaiting the arrival of reciprocal permit!!).

Yes, I have been using the RV100 (2m version) for a couple of years, and
you can bet I havn't pittied the poor Rexon a bit: I carry it almost where
ever I go, and it has slipped a couple of times from my clomsy hands, even
so that the battery compartment had to be replaced, but, it looks like
there still is a chance you can get value for your investment: The rig is
working 100 % after all the rude handling I've given it.
Just as a nice extra (which was one reason why I accepted it) comes the
no-screwdriver-needed modification to RX & TX range 130.000-174.995 MHz
(which I, ofcourse, needed only for measurement purposes, for repairing
VHF equipment).
: Thanks in advance, Laurent.

To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Because there has been some interest in the ICOM W21AT in this news group, the
following information might prove useful . . .
Last Saturday I went to the ICOM Tour America demo at Rivendell in Derry, NH.
The ICOM W21AT was on sale for $435. The tour may have missed your city or may
already have passed through, but if I were in the market for a W21AT I'd
consider checking the ICOM ads, seeing where it was stopping next, and calling
the dealer to see if the HT could be purchased by mail at the special price.
I'd also consider calling ICOM to learn if there are any other ways of
getting the unit at the promotional price. I've no guarantees that either
approach will work but, for $65, it's worth a shot.

If anybody has any information on the Ramsey VHF FM kits I would like to
hear from you. I'm thinking about investing in one as my summer
project. I'm especially looking at the 220 version. If anybody has
experience with them and or has some dealer info please let me know. I
was wondering if they are unusually difficult to put together and what
the specs. are for the finished product. THX in advance DE N0UJT A.K.A.

Subject: isuzu amigo and hf glitch
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Howdy....
I recently installed a temporary mount for an HF rig in my 1990 Isuzu Amigo.
I have 2m, 220, 440, and a DC to Daylight scanner in there also, but it is
permanantly in there...
Anyway, I put me a 3/8 x 24 mount on the spare tire thing and hooked up my
hf power cable to my power block I put under the seat...and when I keyed up
with about 100w on 10m (28.425 I think) the intermittant wipers kicked on...
Anyway, it was not raining, so I really couldn't use this "feature."
I did tune up an HF 'bumstick' style whip that I have on CAP freqs very well.
No RF problems, bites, or unusual 'features' in the car on that rig...just the
widshield wipers on 10m.... I did not try any other band...only tried two
frequencies - 4469 and 28.425.
So...any recommemdations??? The rig was NOT grounded to the frame...only
ground was on the (-) lead on the power...
There is a good ground at the antenna mount.
Thanks in advance!
John

My MFJ keyer adds an extra dit after the first dah (intermittant), so that a
3 di di di da dah comes out as an SK di di di da di dah. It is NOT RF since
this happens without it hooked to the rigs, I have replaced all the .01 mdf
caps on the dot & dash lines, I tested other caps for the .22 & .33 mdf caps
and other 1N4148 diodes. Nothing has worked so far. I even tried a pull-up
resistor on the dot line. If anyone has ideas please send them to:

Can anyone give me some good advice on some military gear I can try to find
at a DRMO ??? (I am in AF MARS and CAP and can screen stuff for both)
I want to know what nomenclature are good HF rigs for either manpack or
base....especially looking for something that will cover the 6m hamband,
in either FM mode or SSB ... if FM, I'd like to go at least 2 past decimal.
Thanks..
(Oh, I did pick up a URR-52A 30-1000 mhz allmode receiver...any advise on
using this to get TV video???I output the video to a monitor, and I can get
a picture, but it is 'crooked' black and white, and looked inverse too..
Thanks..

I have the copy of the Ten-Tec "T-Kits" catalog. They currently have about
27 kits listed - and at excellent prices!!! More are coming. I called
Ten-Tec with questions about the 6 meter transverter and they faxed
me a copy of the schematic - verrryyy impresive (16 transistor circuit).
call them at 615-453-7172 for a catalog. I plan on purchasing several
of the kits in the catalog.

P.S.
Most TEN-TEC kits are sold complete with all hardware, cabinet, etc.
TEN-TEC also sells circuit boards, hardware packs, cabinets, separately.

I talked with somebody at Ten-Tec he said that they had to make some changes to
the 6 meter transverter and it would be out soon. I think I would rather have
one that worked a little late than one that didn't work right a little sooner.

ANY radio that will receive from DC to blue light IS going to
suffer from intermod. I don't own an FT-530. I do own an Alinco
DJ-580. It, like all others of that ilk, has it's "front end" wide
open. How else can these radios copy such wide frequency ranges?
The only way to keep out intermod is to make the "front end"
tight. Like the Radio Shack 2 meter talkie. It does not suffer
but the only things it can hear are between 144 & 148 Mhz. So
you have to take the bad with the good. BTW *NO* conversation
whatsoever will "open up" a tight radio like the RS one and
many others. But listen to the owners of those bitch about it.
